From good girl to ganja queen, Miley Cyrus is a proud celebrity advocate for cannabis.

Everyone knows that Miley Cyrus smokes pot. It’s not something she’s been secretive about over the last few years. One need only turn on the TV or look at a smartphone screen to see it – there’s Miley onstage with a joint, and here she is on Instagram, blowing out a cloud of smoke.

She wasn’t always so open about her love of cannabis, however. Although it may be hard to remember after years of watching her twerk and tongue-wag her way through music videos and award shows, Miley Cyrus used to be a clean-cut, straight-laced Disney darling. In fact, that’s how she got her big break.

Now Miley Marijuana; Once Hannah Montana

In the early 2000’s, Miley gained teen idol status by starring on the Disney series Hannah Montana. In it, she played Miley Stewart, a teen who was a regular schoolgirl with a secret identity: famous pop star Hannah Montana. The show was a huge success, scoring Miley a recording contract with Hollywood Records and inspiring a spinoff Hannah Montana movie.

Over the years, Miley has had several number-one albums and a string of hits such as “Party in the U.S.A.” and “We Can’t Stop.” She nabbed a spot as coach on the singing competition series The Voice and has repeatedly been included on Time magazine’s list of most influential people.

As with any celebrity, along with the success has come scandal. Over the past several years, Miley has shocked the public with her irreverent and unexpected behavior. At just 15, she took part in a partially-nude photo shoot with famed photographer Annie Liebovitz (a shoot for which Miley later apologized, saying she was “embarrassed” that she had done it).

In 2009, she did an unexpected and sexy pole dance on top of a prop ice cream cart while singing “Party in the U.S.A.” at the otherwise family-friendly Teen Choice Awards. At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Miley stunned audiences again by twerking rather suggestively against singer Robin Thicke as they performed his hit “Blurred Lines.”

Miley’s Cannabis Controversy

Miley’s scandals weren’t only limited to photo shoots and award shows; there were also whispers about her cannabis consumption.

These days, Miley is out and proud about her love of dank bud, but that wasn’t always the case. In 2011, a video surfaced showing the former Disney star smoking psychedelic salvia (an LSD-like herb that is not to be confused with cannabis sativa). At the time, media outlets claimed that Miley’s behavior was a cry for help and an attempt to get her parents to pay attention to her.

Then, just over a year later, another video emerged – this one of Miley speaking at the party her friends had thrown for her 19th birthday. Standing next to Kelly Osbourne, Miley announced to the crowd, “You know you’re a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake. You know you smoke way to much $%#&ing weed…”

The uproar was immediate. What!? A young, wealthy pop star smokes marijuana!? People were divided in their opinions: was Miley simply having fun and doing what all kids do, or was she purposely trying to separate herself from her clean-cut, Disneygirl image?

Miley and her friends quickly backed off of the cannabis comments, with Kelly Osbourne tweeting, “let me make something very clear after @MileyCyrus salvia incident we started calling her bob miley as a JOKE! the cake was also A JOKE! it makes me sick that @MileyCyrus so called ‘friends’ would sell her out and lead people 2 believe she is someone that she is not!”

Just joking. Right.

Cannabis Use in History

Does She Or Doesn’t She?

Is-she-or-isn’t-she media speculation continued, complete with a Cyrus spoof sketch on Saturday Night Live. As time went on, Miley became less apologetic about being connected with cannabis. Photographers snapped a picture of her leaving Therapeutic Health Care, a medical marijuana dispensary in Sherman Oaks, California. “It’s not clear if she purchased anything,” media outlets said.

Sure. Right.

Next came an Instagram photo of what looked suspiciously like the former Disney star ensconced in smoke while toking a joint. While the identity of the individual in the photo was never verified (*cough, cough*), Miley never denied that it was her. A few months later, she gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which she openly discussed her thoughts on pot:

“I think alcohol is way more dangerous than marijuana – people can be mad at me for saying that, but I don’t care. I’ve seen a lot of people spiral down with alcohol, but I’ve never seen that happen with weed.”

While that statement was definitely supportive, it still wasn’t an all-out admission that she enjoyed consuming cannabis. She did so in a joking fashion on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2013. When talking about her friendship with rapper Snoop Lion (now known – again – as Snoop Dogg), Miley mentioned that the two were very similar. Kimmel joked, “That’s because he’s so high he doesn’t know what his name is.”

“We both are, we both are,” responded Miley. She refused to directly answer questions about whether or not she smoked pot, however. “You can’t ask someone that and expect them to say yes.”

She Does!

By July of 2013, Miley finally felt comfortable saying yes to questions about her cannabis consumption. In an interview with Australia’s Style, she said, When I smoke, I don’t get that sick feeling I get when I drink, or that anger rising up.”

A slew of marijuana mentions came in the following months. Miley spent time in an Amsterdam cannabis coffee shop and commented, “Didn’t you know that coffee [in Amsterdam] makes your eyes like this and gives you mad cotton mouth?” (*wink, wink*)

The High Life

She tweeted a photo of her wearing a “Reefer Fever” shirt featuring an image of Justin Bieber smoking a joint while surrounded by marijuana leaves. She even lit up a joint while onstage at the MTV Europe Music Awards, which were held in Amsterdam in 2013.

Matter-of-Face About Marijuana

These days, news about Miley and marijuana is no longer the shock-du-jour. The Huffington Post even published a 2015 article entitled, “Miley Cyrus Reminds Us She Smokes Weed For The Millionth Time.” She’s become an outspoken celebrity cannabis enthusiast, joining the ranks of her friend Snoop Dogg and country artist Willie Nelson.

In December 2016, Miley made a permanent display of her cannabis love by having a tiny marijuana leaf inked on the inside of her left ankle. She shared a photo of her new tattoo with her fans on Instagram. This followed a series of weed-themed holiday pics that showed off her funky Christmas attire. In one pic, Miley is cross-eyed and posing in a red sweatshirt that says: “The tree isn’t the only thing getting lit this year.” Another photo shows the pop star in an “ugly Christmas sweater” emblazoned with Santa faces, marijuana leaves, and “Smoke weed every Christmas.”

Another noteworthy Instagram photo? Miley posing next to a marijuana bar that was set up at her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth’s birthday party. The caption read: “@merryjane hooked it up! Wowzyyyyyyyy! Thanks Uncle @snoopdogg for being such a dope ganja innovator.”

I think it’s pretty safe to say that from now on, Miley is solidly on Team Cannabis.
