With cannabis illegal, there are a lot of everyday issues that have no options for resolution. If your dealer sells you bunk weed, you can’t give him a bad Yelp review. If someone steals your stash, you can’t go to the cops and expect any assistance. But that didn’t stop one Australian from calling to complain when his crop was burned.
Dad burnt weed. That escalated quickly
In the Northern Territory, a man had moved back into the area and subsequently been at odds with his father. We don’t know exactly what the dispute stemmed from, but it came to a head on the 6th of July, and what the father did to get back at his son is beyond sad. Duty superintendent Louise Jorgensen summarized the subsequent police involvement in a post on Facebook.
Things came to a head yesterday evening and that’s when the contraband was destroyed.
As retribution his father burnt the son’s prized cannabis plants in a bonfire on the property.
The son felt this was wrong and reported the matter to police. Officers attended and confirmed that was indeed the case.
The son was indignant and enraged. It was questioned whether he was aware that possession of cannabis was unlawful and he could be liable to prosecution for the same.
Yes, the whole situation took place in an area where cannabis is still illegal. Calling the cops to tell them you had a huge cannabis grow probabl wasn’t the smartest idea.
He seemed to believe that the destruction of the same was far worse than the possession in the first instance.
According to police, the son has since uprooted and moved away from his father. Jorgensen admitted they couldn’t press charges of possession or cultivation against the son.
The evidence has been destroyed.
Whether the conflict stemmed from the growth of cannabis itself has not been said, but the father obviously had little enough love of the herb to go so far as to burn the precious plants (without putting them in a pipe first). Because no charges were filed, the men’s names were kept confidential.
Can you imagine the scene when police arrive to confirm the situation? There is a giant bonfire of cannabis plants, an old man laughing, and an irate son who obviously feels entitled enough to not only brazenly grow cannabis en masse but complain to authorities when something happens to it?
What did he expect? A citation for the destruction of his illegal property?
