Decarboxylation of marijuana is the process by which carbon atoms are removed from every other atom in the marijuana, whether it’s the THCs or the cannabinoids and everything else that needs the carbon atom to be broken off to make the marijuana active. Decarboxylation automatically happens when we smoke marijuana or cook it with butter, oil or fat. Cooking and heating allows the decarboxylation process to occur. But in the method described below it is a bit different. This process of decarboxylating marijuana can be used for tinctures and anything else where you are not going to raise the temperature of cooking above 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Let’s take a look at this simple process of decarboxylation that can be done at home.
Kitchen Tools required:
- An oven( this is where the carbon atoms will be broken off)
- A grinder
- An oven safe dish
- Aluminium foil
- 1oz of marijuana
Start by grinding the marijuana into a coarse and mealy consistency using the grinder. Don’t make it too fine or coarse. You can grind it after the decarboxylation process is over, but in this method we’re grinding the weed before decarbing.
In the next step you’ll preheat the oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Line the oven safe dish evenly with the ground up marijuana and then cover the dish with aluminium foil tightly to seal it so that none of the gases escape.
Now put the sealed marijuana in the oven for 2 hours at 220 degrees. About 20 minutes after you put it in the oven you will find that your house will stink of marijuana so please be cautious and make sure that no one is around who might get disturbed, offended or call the police while you are doing this.
If you happen to use more than 1 ounce of marijuana you should increase its time in the oven according to that. After 2 hours take the oven dish out of the oven and let it cool down properly before you remove the aluminium foil from the top.
Once the oven dish has sufficiently cooled down you may remove the aluminium foil. The marijuana is nowdecarboxylated and fully active. You can use it in anything that does not require heating, cooking or baking. It is ideal for tinctures and cold product recipes. It’s such a simple method that can be easily done at home with very basic tools without much hassle. Try it and be sure to share this method with your friends too.
